Lessons from the US Open

We watch the US Open to see high-level tennis.
Because sports are just sports, right? Wrong.
Here at VIS, we know sports are never “just sports.”
Sports—and especially women’s sports—are a mirror of our culture. They reveal our progress and our pain points. They highlight power and joy. They also expose inequities.
This year’s US Open proved all of that.
From discriminatory comments directed at Taylor Townsend to broadcasters filtering fan reactions to President Trump, the US Open revealed some ugly truths about society today.
But the Slam also spotlighted resilience—and progress.
